Matti Peura
Matti Peura - Finnish Glider Aerobatic Champion in 2005We are sad to report the passing of Matti Peura of Finland last night, on the 26th of July, 2010.

Matti was a member of the CIVA Glider Aerobatics Sub-Committee and an enthusiastic supporter and advocate for glider aerobatics for many years. He was particularly involved in initiative to bring the World Advanced Glider Aerobatic Championships to Finland - the first one just having been completed last Saturday, 24 July, in Jämi.

Only 48 years old, Matti died of prions disease, a very rare ailment. A glider aerobatic pilot himself, he was several times the Finnish Glider Aerobatic Champion, the first Nordic Glider Aerobatic Champion, and was preparing for the FAI Championships in Jämi when he became ill in May.

On the evening of 24 July, at the closing ceremonies for the WAGAC and EGAC in Finland, CIVA President Mike Heuer dedicated the Championships to Matti Peura on behalf of FAI and in tribute to his contributions to glider aerobatics and his role in making that Championships become a reality.

The Championships were a success attracting nearly 60 pilots in Advanced and Unlimited categories and particularly noteworthy was the involvement of many new, young pilots in FAI Aerobatic Championship competition. This makes this event an even more fitting tribute to Matti's memory.

His last appearance at CIVA was in 2007 in Vilnius when he reported on the European Advanced Aerobatic Championships held in Joensuu, Finland. He was very well regarded by his colleagues at the Commission.

Our condolences to his many friends and family.

Erik flew a Swift S-1 to victory.

In second was Ferenc Toth of Hungary in a Swift S-1 and in third, Dietmar Poll of Austria, also in a Swift.

Team winners were (1) Hungary, (2) France, and (3) Poland. 27 pilots flew in the EGAC and one independent.

FAI and CIVA Medals and Diplomas will be presented on the evening of the 25th of July in the Jami Areena on the airfield.

Johan Gustafsson Named World Advanced Glider Champion
Johan Gustafsson of Sweden has captured the title of World Advanced Glider Aerobatic Champion at the 1st WAGAC being held in Finland. Johan flies the Pilatus B4.

Three programmes were flown, despite many delays due to bad weather, and the contest was declared valid. EGAC final results are still being determined and the new Champion will be announced soon.

In second place was Mazen Makari of Great Britain in a MDM-1 Fox and in third Petr Biskup of the Czech Republic in an MDM-1 Fox as well. Team winners were (1) Germany, (2) Sweden, and (3) Czech Republic.

Today the organizers released Bulletin #3 which included a list of participants. Officials, competitors, and team members will come from 17 nations, with three sending pilots from outside the European region. These pilots will enter the contest "hors concours". 54 pilots from the following countries are now registered: Brazil, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the USA. In a surprise move, Spain's federation indicated a team from Spain will not be entered.

The event will be directed by Tomas Korinek, Contest Director of the last EAC in 2008. Tomas is ably assisted by the Aero Club of Touzim. Chief Judge is Nick Buckenham of the United Kingdom and President of the International Jury is Mike Heuer from the USA. Heuer is also President of CIVA.

FAI Flag Flies Over Jämi
The 1st World Advanced Glider Aerobatic Championships and 10th European Glider Aerobatic Championships in Unlimited category opened today at 10.00 in Jämi, Finland.

Taking advantage of good weather, the Contest Director, Kari Kemppi decided to start flying on Saturday, 17 July, and ahead of schedule. Two flight programmes were completed -- the Known compulsory flights in Advanced and Unlimited. The official opening ceremony was delayed to accommodate the flying, which is everyone's top priority.

Tapio Pitkänen, President of the Finnish Aeronautical Association, welcomed everyone to Jämi and Finland and spoke of the 75 year anniversary of this airfield which was observed this year. Jämi is the capitol of Finnish glider flying. Mike Heuer, President of CIVA and the International Jury at this Championships made the official opening on behalf of FAI.

Weather permitting, Advanced category will continue today with the 1st Unknown.

The two events, being held in conjunction with each other in Jami, Finland, opens on Saturday, the 17th of July.

This will be the first FAI Glider Aerobatic Championships ever held in the Advanced category -- a new competition recently added to CIVA's calendar of events. The European Championships will feature glider pilots in the Unlimited category. Both are being held together to save cost. Jami is the home of Finnish glider flying.

The Championships will be headed by Contest Director Kari Kemppi. Chief Judge is Philippe Kuechler of Switzerland. President of the International Jury is Mike Heuer of the USA.

CIVA Rules Proposals for 2011
The deadline for the submission of rules change proposals to CIVA has now passed. The deadline was 23.59 Central European Time on July 1st.

Ten countries submitted proposals including the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Russia, South Africa, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the USA. Proposals were for both Power and Glider Aerobatics.

The CIVA Rules and Judging Sub-Committees will meet in Jami, Finland on July 16th, just prior to the World Advanced Glider Aerobatic Championships which begin the next day. The Sub-Committees will consider all of the proposals and then issue their recommendations to CIVA. CIVA will meet in plenary session in Oberhausen, Germany on 6-7th November. Proposals which do not survive Sub-Committee scrutiny will not be considered at the plenary.

The CIVA Glider Aerobatics Sub-Committee (GASC) will also meet during the course of the World Advanced Glider Aerobatic Championships, marking the first time these Sub-Committees have formally met at the same location.

Power proposals did not include Known/Q sequences as the deadline for these will come later in the year. Glider Knowns, however, will be considered at the GASC meeting in Finland.

The proposal packages for Power and Glider are attached here as PDFs and available for download.

Rules Proposals Due 1 July 2010
The CIVA Rules, Judging, and Glider Aerobatics Sub-Committees will be meeting prior to or during the World Advanced Glider Aerobatic Championships in Jami, Finland in July to consider the various rules proposals submitted by Delegates for the 2011 contest season and beyond.

The deadline for the submission of rules proposals, which must come from Delegates, is 1 July 2010. Rules proposals are to be submitted directly to the President of CIVA, Mike Heuer, by email (mike@mheuer.com).

Once these rules proposals are reviewed by Sub-Committees, their recommendations will be forwarded to CIVA for consideration at its plenary meeting in early November in Germany.

Proposals for the 2011 Glider Advanced and Glider Unlimited Known sequences must also be submitted by 1 July. Deadline for Power sequences will be announced at a later date.

Advanced Category Aircraft Restrictions end in 2011
Since the first World Advanced Aerobatic Championships was held in Cape Town, South Africa in 1995, CIVA has kept in place restrictions on the aircraft that can be used in these Championships. Through the years, there have been various modifications to these rules to keep them up-to-date and in touch with the changing situation in competition.

At its plenary meeting in Oshkosh in October 2009, CIVA voted to end these restrictions effective January 1st, 2011. Any aircraft will be eligible to fly in future European and World Advanced Aerobatic Championships starting next year.
